4. Frances Kelsey dies at 101
Kelsey, PhD'38, MD'50, who received a 2006 Alumni Association Professional Achievement Award, helped prevent birth defects in the United States by opposing thalidomide for pregnant women. She died one day after receiving the Order of Canada.
